A season meant for letting go

There’s something about high summer that invites everyone to loosen their shoulders a little. Longer days. Golden evenings. Kids who would rather be moving than sitting still. It’s a beautiful season for family photography — especially if you’re open to letting your session feel more like real life than a formal occasion.

Summer in Canberra is a wonderful time to book an evening session, when the light softens and the heat eases. We can meet by the water (Canberra does have beaches… of a sort 😉 — just ask me for my favourites), wander through a park, or stay close to home and use your own backyard as the backdrop. Wherever your family naturally relaxes is usually where the magic happens.

Choosing locations that feel easy

One of the things I love most about summer sessions is how easily they invite play. Kids can bounce on the trampoline, kick a football, run barefoot through the grass, or splash in the pool. Parents don’t have to hush or hover. There’s space for laughter, movement, and the kind of joyful chaos that actually feels like you. These sessions aren’t about everyone behaving perfectly - they’re about being together.

When movement matters more than stillness

Choosing a relaxed location and a candid, lifestyle approach can be especially wonderful for families with children who might be hesitant about photos, or who simply don’t want to sit still for very long (which, honestly, is most kids). When there’s permission to move and play, the pressure melts away. What’s left is connection - the sideways glances, the shared jokes, the way your people naturally find each other.

A gentle, go-with-the-flow approach

During our session, I’ll come along with you, follow the fun, and probably have a laugh with you too. I’m always happy to gently direct or suggest if it’s helpful, but most of the time I’m just letting your family do what they already do best — be themselves. I’ll be watching for the moments of humour, tenderness, and closeness that unfold when no one is trying too hard.
