I’ll be honest from the start — I’m probably a little biased. I’m a Canberra newborn photographer, after all. But I’m also a mother, and I’ve lived long enough with my own family photographs to know just how deeply they weave themselves into your life.

The images you make in these early days don’t fade into the background. They’re the ones you come back to again and again. Years from now, you’ll still be opening them, holding them, tracing the tiny details you once knew by heart. These photographs will be looked at thousands of times over a lifetime — by you, by your child, by the people who love them. When I think of it that way, professional newborn photography feels less like a luxury, and more like an investment in memory.

Of course, professional photographers don’t just bring a “fancy camera.” What we really bring is a way of seeing. An understanding of light — how to shape it so it falls softly across your baby’s skin, how to create that gentle, creamy background that feels calm and timeless rather than busy or distracting. We know how to guide poses so they feel natural and unforced, never stiff or overly styled. The goal is always ease — images that look like how it felt, not how it was arranged.

There’s also something subtle but powerful in having someone else hold the responsibility of noticing. In those newborn days, you’re tired, tender, and so deeply inside the experience of mothering. A professional photographer creates space for you to simply be there — to breathe, to hold your baby, to look at them with love — while someone else quietly captures those moments as they unfold. Those fleeting expressions, the way your face softens when you look down at your baby, the tenderness you don’t even realise you’re carrying.

One of the most meaningful gifts professional photography offers is perspective. It allows you to see yourself as others see you: calm, loving, present. So many mothers tell me they don’t have photos of themselves with their babies because they’re always the one taking them. A newborn session gently changes that story. You’re no longer behind the lens — you’re part of the narrative, woven into the visual history of your family.

Professional photography will capture more than the beautiful precious details of your baby's first days. It captures how you family is at this time. It captures the way you look at each other, the way you reach for each other, lean into each other. In years to come, it allows you to really enter back into this moment, this time when you baby was so small.

Of course, it's an investment. You're paying for my time, expertise, and equipment. For an experience that is carefully curated for your comfort and convenience, but also for so many things that happen behind the scenes to create the beautiful, intimate gallery that I deliver to you a week or so after our session.

Understanding why photography costs money doesn't necessarily make it easier to find some extra money to set aside, at what is an expensive time for many families. This is why I have payment plans available, to help you make it work for your family. Simply reach out to ask me about the details.

So yes, I may be biased. But I believe with my whole heart that professional newborn photography is worth it — not because the images are beautiful (though they are), but because they honour a season that passes far too quickly. They let you rest, feel held, and know that this love — this beginning — has been carefully, thoughtfully preserved.
