There’s a version of motherhood we’re often shown.
It’s tidy. Calm. Coordinated. The baby sleeps when they’re meant to. The toddler smiles on cue. The mother looks rested, gently glowing, somehow untouched by the sheer magnitude of what her days hold and what her body has just accomplished.
And then there is motherhood as it is.
It’s slower in some moments, impossibly fast in others. It’s feeding a baby while answering a question from a bigger child while mentally running through the shopping list you forgot again. It’s washing piling up and tiny socks disappearing and the quiet ache of loving something so much it feels almost too big to carry.
It’s beautiful. But not in a polished way.
It’s beautiful in the way that real things are.
The in-between moments
So much of early motherhood lives in the in-between.
The way your baby curls into you, instinctively, like they’ve always known you (because they have).
The way your hand rests on their back without thinking.
The way you sway, even when you’re not holding them anymore.
These are not the moments we usually think of as “photo-worthy”.
They’re not planned. They’re not posed. They don’t come with instructions.
But they are everything.
When I think about newborn photography here in Canberra, I don’t think about perfection. I think about these moments. The ones that happen quietly, almost unnoticed, until suddenly they’re gone.
A baby stretches and changes. A phase passes. A rhythm shifts.
You don't have to perform here
One of the most common things I hear from mothers before a session is this quiet concern.
“We’re not very good in front of the camera.”
“My toddler won’t sit still.”
“I don’t think our home is ‘photo ready’.”
There’s often an unspoken belief that you need to prepare - not just practically, but emotionally. That you need to arrive as a slightly more organised, more composed version of yourself.
But motherhood doesn’t work like that.
And neither do my sessions.
You don’t need to rehearse anything. You don’t need to get your children to behave in a certain way. You don’t need a perfectly styled home or a baby who sleeps on cue.
You just need to arrive as you are.
Tired, maybe.
A little overwhelmed, possibly.
Completely in love, even when it feels messy.
That’s enough.
More than enough.
The beauty in the chaos
Children are not meant to sit still and smile on command.
Babies cry. Toddlers run. Big kids have opinions. Life unfolds in real time, and it doesn’t pause just because someone is holding a camera. These are not interruptions to the session - they are the session.
A baby photoshoot doesn’t have to be controlled to be beautiful. In fact, the opposite is often true.
When we let go of the idea that everything needs to look a certain way, something else takes its place. Connection. Ease. Honesty.
And those are the things that last.
Your home is already enough
There is something deeply comforting about being in your own space.
You know where everything is. You know where the light falls in the afternoon. You know which corner of the couch you always end up in.
Your baby knows it too.
There is no travel time, no settling in period, no unfamiliar environment to navigate. Just the quiet familiarity of home.
When I arrive for a newborn photography session in Canberra, I’m not looking for a perfectly styled house. I’m looking for light, connection, and the small details that make your space yours.
The bassinet beside your bed.
The half-folded pile of washing.
The soft blanket you’ve been living under for weeks.
These things tell your story.
Not a version of your life curated for someone else, but your life as it is being lived right now.
And that is always enough.
You are part of the story, too
It’s easy, especially in those early weeks, to step quietly to the side. To focus entirely on your baby. To document them, hold them, meet their every need.
But you are part of this story, and that's important.
Your baby loves to look at you. And settles when you hold them. You are the whole world to them. This matters - and it will still matter in 5, 10, 50 years.
In every baby photoshoot, I gently bring you back into the frame. Not in a performative way. Not in a way that asks you to be anything other than who you already are.
Just as you are, holding your baby. Responding. Giving them everything you have to give.
Years from now, these images won’t just be about how your baby looked - but also about how it felt to be there.
Less preparation, more presence
You don’t need to spend days preparing for a session, or waiting for everything to feel more in control. That moment may never come! And it doesn't need to.
Some of the most meaningful sessions happen on ordinary days. Days where nothing special was planned. Days that felt a bit chaotic, a bit full, a bit real.
You might still be in your comfortable clothes. Your toddler might be in something they insisted on wearing. The baby might need to be fed, changed, held close again and again.
All of that is welcome.
In fact, it’s what I’m there for.
Because when we let go of preparation, we make space for presence.
And presence is where the real beauty lives.
A gentler way of remembering
Photographs are not just about how things looked. They’re about how things felt. In years to come, looking at photographs of you with your baby will bring back the feelings of these newborn days, when you felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and like you could not physically contain the love you have for this beautiful tiny human.
This happen not through perfectly posed images, but through honest ones. Images that reflect the rhythm of your days, the connection you share, the quiet, unspoken moments that make up your life.
This is what I hope to create with every newborn photography session in Canberra.
Not something performative. Not something polished beyond recognition.
Just something real.
Motherhood, as it is
Motherhood is not a highlight reel.
It is layered. Complex. Tender. Demanding. Joyful. Exhausting.
It is sitting on the couch with a sleeping baby and realising you haven’t moved in an hour.
It is being needed in a hundred small ways, all day long.
It is finding beauty in places you never thought to look.
And it deserves to be seen that way.
Not edited into something unrecognisable. Not simplified into something it’s not.
But honoured, gently, exactly as it is.
If you're waiting for the "right" time
You don’t have to wait. Not until the baby sleeps better, or the house is tidier, or you feel more like yourself again. There's no perfect age.
This is already your life, as it is now. And it is already worthy of being remembered.
If you’re drawn to a more natural, relaxed approach to newborn photography or a baby photoshoot that meets you where you are, you’re always welcome here.
You can come exactly as you are.
I’ll meet you there.
