One of the very first questions families ask when they’re thinking about booking a family photoshoot is a simple one - where should we do it?

Outdoors, in the comfort of your own home, or in a studio?

There’s no single “right” answer. The best location is always the one that feels most aligned with your family — your rhythms, your children, your season of life, and what you want these photographs to hold for you in years to come.

If you’re considering family photography, this choice can feel especially meaningful. We’re so lucky here — surrounded by bushland, open skies, beautiful homes, and light that changes with the seasons. Each option offers something different, and each comes with its own advantages and challenges.

Let’s walk through them together, slowly and honestly, so you can feel grounded and confident in choosing what’s right for your family.

Outdoor Family Photography Sessions

There’s something deeply expansive about photographing families outdoors. Space to breathe. Space to move. Space for children to be exactly who they are.

Why Families Love Outdoor Sessions

Canberra’s natural beauty is something special.

One of the real gifts of living here is the diversity of landscapes right on our doorstep - open grasslands, quiet bush tracks, lakeside light, golden paddocks, native trees that hold so much texture and tone. An outdoor family photoshoot can reflect not just your family, but the place you’re raising them.

Many families choose locations that are personally meaningful - a park you visit every weekend, a walking trail where your kids learned to ride their bikes, or even your own backyard. These places already hold memory, which adds depth and emotion to the photographs we make together.

Children have room to move and feel free.

Outdoors, children don’t have to “behave”. They can run, climb, explore, collect sticks, splash in puddles, or simply lie in the grass. This freedom often leads to the most genuine moments - the ones that feel like your family, not a performance of one.

Pets can often be included.

Depending on the location we choose, dogs and other pets can absolutely be part of your session. For many families, pets are family - and it can feel really important to include them naturally.

There’s no limit on who you bring.

Outdoor sessions are wonderfully flexible. Big families, extended family members, grandparents, cousins - there’s room for everyone if that’s what you want. No tight walls or space constraints.

Things to Keep in Mind

We’re guided by the weather.

Outdoor sessions mean being open to Canberra’s moods - sometimes warm and golden, sometimes brisk, sometimes unpredictable. We always plan thoughtfully and keep an eye on forecasts, but flexibility is part of the deal.

Timing matters.

To catch that beautiful, soft light, outdoor sessions are usually scheduled  later in the afternoon or evening - the timing depends on sunset at that time of year. This can mean slightly unusual timing for small children, but it’s often worth it for the feel of the images.

Clothing needs to match the conditions.

Dressing kids for the weather is important — warm enough to be comfortable, but not so bundled that they can’t move freely. I always help guide this so it feels simple and manageable.

In home family photography sessions

For many families, home is where the heart of everything happens. It’s where you’re already yourselves — and that’s exactly why in-home sessions can feel so powerful.

Why Families Choose In-Home Sessions

Everyone is instantly more comfortable.

There’s something grounding about being in your own space. Children know where things are. Parents don’t feel rushed. Interactions unfold naturally - on the couch, in the kitchen, on the floor of a bedroom that already holds stories.

There’s no need to go anywhere.

No packing the car. No racing the clock. No forgetting snacks (because they’re already there). If someone needs a break, a feed, or a quiet moment, it’s easy.

Children can play in familiar ways.

Favourite toys. Books they love. The backyard cubby. The corner where they always build Lego. These details root your photographs in real life - the life you’re actually living right now.

Pets are easily included.

At home, pets can drift in and out naturally, without stress or restrictions. They belong there, and it shows.

Common Worries (and some Gentle Reframes, if you don't mind 😊)

“I don’t feel comfortable inviting someone into my home.”

This is so understandable. Having someone new step into your personal space can feel vulnerable. If this is something you’re navigating, we can always arrange a consultation call beforehand - a chance to meet me, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There’s no pressure, no obligation.

“My home isn’t photo-worthy.”

I hear this all the time — and I want to say this gently but clearly: your home does not need to be perfect.

These photographs are not about showcasing your house like a real estate listing. They’re about your family - how you move together, play together, care for each other, and exist in this season of life.

If it helps, you might choose to move some of the daily objects of living - piles of paperwork, loose toys, bags - into washing baskets in another room temporarily. But even that is optional. There is no expectation of styling, redecorating, or perfection.

Real homes tell real stories. That’s the point.

Studio Family Photography Sessions

Studio sessions offer a different experience again - one that can feel calm, contained, and predictable.

Why Some Families Prefer the Studio

Everything is prepared for you.

Lighting, temperature, and setting are all controlled. There’s no weather to worry about, no harsh sun, no wind.

The outcome is more predictable.

Because the environment is consistent, studio sessions tend to have a more uniform look. This can feel reassuring if you know exactly what style of image you’re hoping for.

It can feel simpler for very young babies.

Especially with newborns, the controlled climate and lighting can be helpful and comfortable.

Things to Consider Carefully

The experience may feel less unique.

Studio sessions don’t reflect your home or a meaningful outdoor space. For some families, that’s perfectly fine. For others, it can feel less personal.

Not all families suit the studio environment.

The studio space is child-safe and calm, but it’s cosy and best suited to small groups - generally up to about four people. It’s not ideal for children who need lots of space to move or for larger family groups.

Pets can’t be accommodated.

If including your pet is important to you, the studio won’t be the right fit.

So...which one is right for you?

When choosing between outdoor, in-home, and studio family photography Canberra, I always encourage families to ask themselves a few gentle questions:

Where do we feel most ourselves?

What do we want these photos to remember?

How do our children move through the world right now?

What feels supportive, not stressful, in this season?

There’s no hierarchy here. No option is “better” than another. The best choice is the one that honours your family as you are - not who you think you should be.

Let’s Talk It Through

If you’re still unsure, that’s completely okay. You don’t need to have it all figured out before reaching out.

I’m always happy to chat through your options, answer questions, or help you weigh up what might work best for your family. You can get in touch to ask a simple question, book a consultation call, or enquire about a family photoshoot - no pressure, just connection.

However you choose to do this, you’re allowed to choose ease. And you’re allowed to choose what feels like home.

If you’re ready, I’d love to hear from you.
