It doesn't need to be perfect

There’s such a gentle kind of honesty that lives in an in-home newborn session, and it never asks your home to look like anything other than the place where you’re finding your way together. We’ll wander slowly through the spaces that hold you right now — your living room, your bedroom, maybe the nursery — following the light and the little moments that unfold naturally. Life with a newborn often brings shifting routines and sweet, necessary chaos, and that’s all part of your story. If it helps, you’re welcome to do a quick sweep of those rooms beforehand — a simple basket to tuck away the bits and pieces that tend to gather is more than enough. But please know there’s no pressure at all; nothing needs to be spotless or styled. I’m always happy to gently move things out of frame with your okay, and together we’ll create images that feel like home in the truest, softest way.

Should I move nap and feeding times for the session?

One of the loveliest gifts of an in-home newborn session is how gently it folds itself around your baby’s own rhythms. There’s no need to shift naps or stretch feeds or rework a routine that’s only just finding its shape. When I arrive, we simply begin right where you are — feeding in the quiet light of the living room, a warm cuddle in your arms, a peaceful nap, or a little wiggle time on the floor. If you think your little one might be sleeping when I walk in, slipping them into their session outfit beforehand can help us move softly through the morning without waking them unnecessarily. It means I can capture them exactly as they are, resting comfortably in the place that already knows them best.

Warm the house

We all know how changeable Canberra weather is, and keeping your home beautifully warm on the day of our session makes such a difference for your little one. Because bubby will often be unwrapped or lightly dressed so we can capture all those tiny details — the soft curve of their back, their sweet little fingers and toes — a cosy space helps them stay relaxed and settled. It’s usually best to have the temperature a touch warmer than you’d naturally choose, even if you’re in a summer dress or a simple T-shirt. That gentle warmth wraps around your baby like a continuous cuddle, protecting them from any cool drafts and allowing us to move softly through the session without disturbing their comfort.

Which spaces work best?

Before the day of the session, it can help to think about where in your home has the best natural light - this will probably be the best place for us to hold the session. It's nearly always the master bedroom and/or a living area. Large windows and a good aspects make for beautiful light in the room to photograph.

But you might also want to think about your home in a different way in preparation for our session - in terms of how your family uses it during this season. Perhaps there are things about your life right now that you might want to capture. The bed you’ve all been piling onto for morning cuddles (or perhaps you hang out there all day at the moment!). The nursery corner where you spend long nights feeding and rocking. The living room floor where siblings play while the baby naps nearby. These spaces carry a sense of comfort and familiarity that comes through beautifully in photographs.

We'll talk about it when I arrive, but it can help if you have already given some thought to these things before the session, and perhaps spent a little while preparing the space.

Relax and go with the flow

The most nourishing thing you can bring into your in-home newborn session is simply a willingness to breathe and let the day unfold as it wants to. Babies have their own gentle timing, their own needs, their own surprises — and that’s part of the beauty of photographing you in your real space, living your real moments. Whether things go perfectly to plan or wander off in their own direction, we’ll still gather honest, heartfelt images that speak of this season in all its tenderness. Lean into the love you feel for your little one and your family, hold them close, and trust that I’ll take care of everything else. Together, we’ll create something you’ll cherish for years to come.
