That newborn bubble is fleeting - how do you want to remember it?

You’ve brought your beautiful new baby home. The noise of the world seems like a distant memory, and life looks entirely different now. You’re soaking up those squishy cheeks and sleepy cuddles. Maybe there are toddler giggles (or tantrums), and maybe the dog is never far from your side. Whatever your days look like right now, this chapter is tender, important, and worth remembering.

And now you’re thinking about newborn photos. But there’s one decision that might be holding you up: Should you book a lifestyle session at home, or visit a studio instead?

I get asked this often, and it always gets me talking (probably more than people want me to). There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. I’ve worked with families in both settings, and each can be absolutely beautiful - just in different ways.

Let me walk you through what I’ve seen, what I wish more families knew, and how you can decide which kind of newborn session feels right for you right now.

The gentle chaos: why families get stuck here

Often when I talk to parents, they’ve already spent a week (or more) toggling between Google tabs, peeking at Pinterest, and quietly panicking that their house isn’t “big enough” for "tidy enough" for in-home photos, or that a studio session might feel too formal.

First, take a deep breath. You don’t need a perfect house or magazine-ready outfits. And you absolutely don’t need to put on a performance. This is all about honoring your growing family in a way that feels true.

Here’s what I believe: there’s no wrong choice when it reflects where you’re at and what you need right now. You might be craving the comfort of home and everything familiar. Or maybe you’d prefer a calm, welcoming studio where everything’s taken care of. Both can give you stunning, heartfelt images to treasure.

Let’s break it down - honestly and gently.

Studio vs. Lifestyle Sessions: What You Really Need to Know

1. The Experience Itself

In-Home Sessions Feel Like...

  • Staying safe and relaxed in your own space
  • Going with the flow: toddlers roam, newborns feed, you cuddle on the couch where you always do
  • A reflection of your real life - the pace, the chaos, the quiet love.

One session really sticks in my mind. It was the middle of a raging hot Canberra summer, and I arrived at a lovely family’s home, greeted not only by a fresh little newborn and toddler full of energy, but also a number of joyful dogs. There were moments of play, games you could tell were part of their everyday routine, a bit of fleeting resistance from the toddler (as there always is), and lots of laughter and snuggles. It was imperfect in the best way.

Studio Sessions Feel Like...

  • A calm, curated space - already prepped and beautifully lit
  • No preparation needed. Seriously. Just arrive and exhale
  • Still full of emotion and connection (don’t worry, we don’t abandon the candid magic)
  • A bit like being at home - my home studio is cosy, welcoming, and convenient. Park at the door, make yourself at home, and have everything you need here.

Some parents, especially in those early newborn days, love having a place where everything is ready and waiting. My studio in Canberra is set up with climate control and comfy spots to sink into with your baby. Everything we need is already here.

2. The Look and Feel of the Photos

In-Home = Storytelling

You get images that truly capture your life right now: your baby’s cot, your favourite corner, your toddler ‘reading’ a book upside-down

Often a bit less curated and a bit more you

Your space is familiar and unique to you - perhaps you want it to be part of what you look back on when you remember this time.

In a familiar environment, your toddler may do more of the things they usually do for me to capture.

Studio = Simplicity and Focus

Clean backgrounds, controlled lighting, timeless outcomes. The space is decorated with whites and beiges in a range of textures - a neutral backdrop to draw the focus to your family.

You can browse the kinds of images I consistently capture in that space and know what to expect. The beautiful backlit images you see in my "studio" gallery are created against the studio window - it may not be possible to recreate this in your home.

There’s still laughter, emotion, and lots of snuggles - just in a more structured setting. And in some ways, the neutral simplicity of the space leaves more space for the connection and emotion of the images.

You can see galleries of my in-home and studio newborn sessions on the links below - to help you see the difference for yourself.

3. Logistics and Comfort

Choosing home might mean:

No packing bags, strapping kids into car seats, or wondering if you remembered the dummy.

In the early days adjusting to a new baby in the house, your toddler may prefer to stay at home in familiar comfort.

Some parents worry their home isn’t “photo-worthy,” but honestly, it doesn’t need to be. If your home is where your love lives, then it’s already perfect. And I can guide you through a few quick steps to make spaces photo-ready without overwhelm.

But yes, you might want to tidy up a bit (pro tip: just move the day-to-day clutter into baskets and stash them). You can read more tips in my blog here.

Choosing the studio might mean:

One less thing to prep. No cleaning. No piles of clean washing in the background

Reliable comfort - especially in extreme weather

So, which one is right for you?

If you’re still weighing it up, here are a few gentle questions to ask yourself:

Do I feel more relaxed staying in familiar surroundings?

Am I up for getting everyone out the door, or does that feel too hard right now?

Do I love the idea of seeing our daily spaces and rhythms reflected in our photos?

Or does a stress-free, beautifully lit studio sound like heaven?

Remember: You don’t have to have everything sorted or feel completely “together” to book a newborn session. You just need to feel seen and supported - whichever space you choose.

Let’s create something real, wherever you are

The wonder of these early days is how little it takes for love to shine through. A soft touch, an unsure hug from a new big sibling, the way your eyes rest on your baby’s face - these are the things that matter, not the walls around you.

Whether you invite me into your home or come to my Canberra photography studio, my job is the same: to help you relax, to hold space for your family’s beautiful mess, and to create honest images you’ll treasure.
